U.S. customers can now buy an unlocked iPhone 7 from Apple
The iPhone 7 has been available for about a month, and we think it’s a great smartphone. But until now, you’ve had to have your new iPhone to a carrier, even if you bought it off contract. Not any more.
Apple is now offering the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus to US customers SIM-free. This means that it will come unlocked and ready to work on any wireless carrier of your choice. We should note that if you buy the iPhone 7 SIM-free, you can’t use Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program (which is a very good way to upgrade without getting ripped off), but Apple does offer 18-months of special financing.
Do note that if you want an iPhone 7 Plus, shipping times are three to four weeks for most colors, but six to eight weeks for Jet Black. Apple says the new SIM-free iPhone 7 models (with the exception of Jet Black) will be delivered by October 20.
